Today’s video show a plantar fascia mobilization and massage technique that can help relieve foot pain including plantar fasciitis. This technique can also help reduce tension in the arch muscles.

The muscles of the foot can be divided into extrinsic and intrinsic categories where the extrinsic muscles are generally more involved in generating force in order to create movement. The intrinsics, on the other hand, are sometimes referred to as the ‘core’ of the foot and are important stabilizers of the arches of the foot.

The intrinsic muscles play an important role in static posture and control of the foot during dynamic tasks. This is why it is often recommended to complete standing exercises barefoot as such a strategy allows an individual to train their arches while also training other areas of the body.

Pain in the sole of the foot is often reported with tasks that involve prolonged standing or high-volume walking and is thought to be related to irritation of the plantar fascia and/or fatigue of the foot intrinsics.

Shown in this video is a simple massage technique that can be implemented with a partner to relieve pain associated with the intrinsic muscles of the arch or the plantar fascia. Besides trying this technique, make sure to see my other arch posts to learn how to strengthen and stretch this area.
